Enjoy It!

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
I love Courtney Kendrick's blog, C Jane Enjoy It, and reading this compilation of her posts from the last three years was a joy. Her perspective on life is refreshingly positive yet still real. She doesn't sugarcoat or self-edit, rather, she tells it like it is, but with a good attitude. She's a breath of fresh air in the alternately cynical or syrupy blogging world. I met Courtney in person in early 2009 and she is just as gracious in "real life" as she comes across in her writing. I recommend this book highly!

A Christmas Carol

I'm reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for the ward book club that I'm hosting this month. Anyone want to join in? It's an oldie but goodie and it's short!

Also, I think it'd be fun to compile a list of our favorite Christmas books. Our family has a tradition of collecting children's picture books to put under the Christmas tree. We read one every night leading up to Christmas. I have a great collection now, but I'd love to add more! Leave your suggestions in the comments and I will compile a list.

Merry Christmas!!

Breaking Dawn- WARNING- Spoilers ahead!

Okay, I read Breaking Dawn in one day- 7 hours straight of reading. Other than feeling like a total lump, this is what I thought.

1. I was very worried about Bella becoming a vampire during the first three books. I didn't know if I wanted her to remain a human or become a vampire! What if the relationship between Edward and Bella changed? Would it still be as electric between the two of them? But luckily, this part of the book was one of my favorites. I don't know how realistic (I know, these are not realistic books) it was to have Bella transition into being a vampire so easily. She experienced pain but not bloodthirstiness... I don't know, it seemed strange that it came so easily for her. Other than that, I thought Bella as a vampire was super cool. She got to have a "power" which I loved for her and she was beautiful and fast and strong and the chemistry was still crackling!!

2. Renesmee, or however you spell it. Argh. I hated that named. Really. A lot. It distracted me every time I read it.

3. Jacob's perspective. I am a big Jacob fan, but this part seemed to drag on. I did think it was kind of cool that Jacob imprinted on Renesmee- to keep everyone in the family, so to speak.

4. Edward wasn't in it enough.

5. The battle!!! All that build-up for nothing?? I wanted to see the Volturi go down! I thought the whole Immortal Child idea was cool and I really liked the Volturi as villains- they're scary! But I wanted to see some action there! It seemed to end with a big bow on it, a little too tidily.

To sum it up, there were more things in this book that bothered me than in the previous three books, but I still found it immensely entertaining and a satisfying end to the saga.

The Host

I finished The Host and really enjoyed it. What did you all think? Here's my review I wrote for Goodreads.

The Host: A Novel The Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
A grown-up, non-giddy book from Stephenie Meyer (author of the rabidly popular teen fare, the "Twilight" series). While the 15 year old in me loved Twilight, the adult in me loved The Host. The unique science fiction story kept the focus on the characters where it belongs.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially if you've been wary of reading Twilight. It's a totally different feeling and will appeal to a wider audience than the vamp books.

June and July books

At Bethany's suggestion, I think we should read The Host, by Stephenie Meyer! I'm betting many of you have already read it, so let's give ourselves until the end of June to read it and then we'll talk about it! Click here to read an excerpt from The Host.

I'm also going to choose a book for July to keep us on track. Mr. Darcy's Diary by Amanda Grange writes the story from Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy's perspective. I have already started this one and I'm loving it so far! Let's discuss this book towards the end of July. It will be a quick read.
